Prima di tutto benvenuti in Italia, se non sbaglio questa è la prima volta che suonate qui come Blood Youth, vi siete divertiti fino ad ora? Come sta andando il tour con i While She Sleeps?
K: Andremo in studio cinque giorni dopo la fine del tour. Nel disco ci saranno le canzoni migliori che abbiamo mai scritto, nonché le più cattive.
(e invece no).
Last month we had the chance to interview Blood Youth, one of the newest band working with Rude Records. They only released two EPs but they have quite the number of fans all across the world, and touring with While She Sleeps has helped them gaining new ones. Let’s hear what they have to say about their last EP, Closure, and see if there’s something going on with a full lenght.
First of all welcome to Italy! Correct me if I’m wrong but this is the first time you ever play in Italy as Blood Youth, are you enjoying your experience so far? How’s tour going?
Kaya: Yeah! We never really get to see any of the cities we play in that much, but I’m loving it. The drive in here was absolutely amazing, phenomenal. We played in Geneva, and the view from there to here, Milan, is incredible. Mountains and stuff, and where we come from is just sheeps, cows and farms, we’re not used to mountains, it was cool. The tour is amazing, the crowds have been amazing, we never anticipated anything like this, so hopefully tonight will be even better.
Chris: That was absolutely incredible! We toured with so many of our favourite bands like Architects, Every Time I Die, Beartooth, but this one has absolutely been amazing. Some of the best crowds we’ve ever seen.
What can you tell us abut the EP “Closure” that came out earlier this year?
K: We always say that “Closure” is the follow up to our first EP “Inside My Head”, and through that EP I was going trough a bunch of issues when I was writing it, a crazy amount of stuff and “Closure” is wrapping up everything that ever happend on “Inside My Head”. That’s why it’s called “Closure”, because I’m done with that part of my life and I’m moving on to the album later this year. I never thought we could release anything better than “Inside My Head”, it was my baby, but with “Closure” is like when you have two kids and you can’t choose which one you love more.
C: It exceeded our expectations, couldn’t be happier with it, it’s unbelivable.
Talking about this, why did you decide to put “Big Smoke”, which is the last song in “Inside My Head”, your first EP, rivisited as a new track in this new EP? Is there a sort of connection between this two works?
C: There’s a connection! The reason is because “Big Smoke” is the last song in the first EP and we thought that was a good way of showing how they’re related, I love the way “Big Smoke” kind of fade in in the end and the intro of “Closure” is like a completely new territory.
K: It’s called “Big Smoke” and then the first song in “Closure” is called “Breathe”, so now I can breathe cause the big smoke is clear so it all goes together.
So you think that they’re like the same album and listen to them just in a row?
K: Yes, love that. That’s what we always said, I love the idea that someone can go from “Inside My Head” to “Closure” in like that *snaps*.
C: Lirically yes. It doesn’t really flow in one record, but it’s surely down on one line.
Also the artworks resemble each other, they are done by the same artist, so what did you have in mind when you decided to go for it with this artworks?
K: Originally the idea for “Inside My Head” was all those animal fighting but people have taken it and turned it into something else. They were like “Is each animal one of you? What does that mean?”, we liked that and we let people roll with it. With “Closure” it was the same territory: discussing the same sort of things so we sticked with the same plan, but we won’t be doing anything like that again. That’s that chapter and we’re going to do something else for the album, cause people are like “Oh my God do this for every album you release” and we were like “Eerm, no…”
So talking about this album is there something you can tell us or is everything a secret?
K: Yeah… We can say something, we can’t say how is it called but…
C: We’ re headed to the studio immediately after this tour. We’ll be focusing only on it, cause there will also be holidays and we’ll be with family and we just want to stay focused on it without thinking about during the tour like we did in the past.
K: Five days after it. In there there will be the best songs we’ve ever written, also the heaviest.
Now a question we ask each british band we interview: what’s you favourite tea flavour?
C: I don’t like tea. Mine’s coffee or just Yorkshire, even though that’s the brand.
K: Where we come from it’s just Yorkshire tea, I don’t even know if it’s a flavour but that’s what we have.
What do you think about eggs?
K: Eggs? I’m vegan…
C: I’m not vegan, I’m not vegs. Well, he doesn’t like eggs, I like eggs, that’s it. Why this question… I’ve got the feeling something is going to happen…
