“GINGER! Now I got your attention” – Sunshine State Of Mind by We The Kings

Even thought I mentioned GINGER in the title, it doesn’t mean We The Kings are composed just by Travis Clark (guitar/vocals), so let’s mention the rest of the band too: Hunter, guitar; Drew, bass; Danny, drums. Now that you all know who the real kings are, let’s start this review. Oh yeah right, they’re also coming to Italy on the 28th of March, hell yeah!
Sunshine State Of Mind is the fifth album by this Florida based band, and it opens with a very catchy song, Friday Is Forever, and I don’t wanna say a stupid thing but is this song about a one night stand?
Probably not, so let’s go on. The lyrics are about this girl who left this boy, but hey! he found this other girl with who he could try to start again because he was “waiting for a girl like you to change me like the weather”. The music is the typical We The Kings style, very fresh and melodic and “summerish” (yep, I’m inventing words, so what?). The second song is Say You Like Me, they made a super funny video and there’s also a game version in which you can try to save the damsel in distress (hey guys, if you’ll ever read this, I died every single time…my bad). “She’s the kind of girl that no one ever knows, and I say hi but she’s too shy to say hello” pretty obvious what the lyrics are about, ain’t it? It’s a gorgeous song, so “put your hands up if you like me then say you like me”! The guy who likes the shy girl it’s way too self confident (“there’s no one else like me”) but that’s fine anyway!
Every Single Dollar is the third song and it’s boom! Explosion! For real. Even if it’s pretty short it is really a blast. It’s about love, love and again love “you’re the only one I see and I can’t seem to get you off of my mind my darling, pick me up cause I’m falling crazy, madly, deeply in love with you” and about what we are ready to do for love “run away with me and I will take you to the island anywhere you wanna go, I’m down we could build a rocket and fly up to every planet, now we’ll spin the world around”.
The fourth song is The View From Here, and it’s kinda slower than the previous songs. It’s about a recently started love story, about “chasing roads that are never ending here’s our chance to write new history” and about “catching dreams without a border we are here and we are finally free”. Next song is The Secret To New York, and the city that never sleeps (or the big apple, ok let’s stop) is the perfect background for this love story who’s ending (“Baby, it’s over now maybe my ups are all downtown so far away, I’m too lost to be found and baby this time were through maybe I guess you knew nothing matters anymore”) “Broadway in my brain the corner where my dreams became mistakes it was written all over your face you said I don’t know who you are remember Union Square was always ours?”. Ok let’s stop crying after this song and here’s the fifth song Sleep With Me: we are back to the happy part of the relationship, and to the catchy and “summerish” rhythm. It’s a pretty peculiar way to tell a girl that you love her (“hey there hey, someday, can I wake up with you?”) , but we, the girls, like these kind of things. Over You, the title explain it all: honey, I loved you, but you said I made you sick so, even thought I cried, now I’m over you and I’m alive and the bitter days are just a memory now and “the sun is kicking in”. Bye bye honeybee. The next song is Kiss Me Last, it’s the most rock’n’roll and angry song of the album. It’s about the typical “carpe diem” thing, the kind of story that you have to take as it comes to you without thinking about the past so “kiss me last, don’t care who kissed you first”. Ninth song of the album and we got Somebody To Call My Own, and, as the title clearly explains, it’s about finding the right person, the kind of person you would call your own, this kind of person: “I just need to find somebody to call my only one, if I’ve come undone would you sow me up? If I’m broken down, would you stand your ground and fall in love with me?”.
You And Only You is the second ballad of the album and it’s one of the best love songs I’ve ever heard (and I’ve heard a lot of love songs) and it goes like this: “you and only you, you make my heart feel like your pulling every string, you and only you, you make me drop down to my knees and give this ring my everything, baby, once upon a time there was a million stars up high, now you’re the only light I see and I don’t care which way we go, teach me everything you know, everything a love should be so, baby just believe, you and only you”. Summer is the last song of the album and it’s about a summer love, one of those summer loves we didn’t want to end “Summer don’t leave me here, summer run high and dry, watching the waves come down on all the days of you and I, I’m waiting, you’re fading, like sparks in the dark, summer I’ll stand the fall cause without you here I just can’t stand at all”.

Now, go listen to the album because it’s awesome, nuff said.

Siiii!
Probabilmente no, quindi andiamo avanti. “She’s the kind of girl that no one ever knows, and I say hi but she’s too shy to say hello” direi che da queste poche parole è abbastanza ovvio di cosa parli la canzone, o no? E’ davvero una bellissima canzone quindi “put your hands up if you like me then say you like me”!
Parla dell’amore, dell’amore ed ancora dell’amore “you’re the only one I see and I can’t seem to get you off of my mind my darling, pick me up cause I’m falling crazy, madly, deeply in love with you” e parla anche di tutto quello di cui saremmo capaci di fare per amore “run away with me and I will take you to the island anywhere you wanna go, I’m down we could build a rocket and fly up to every planet, now we’ll spin the world around”. La quarta canzone è The View From Here ed è un po’ più lenta rispetto alle precedenti. Parla di una storia cominciata da poco, del “chasing roads that are never ending here’s our chance to write new history” e del catching dreams without a border we are here and we are finally free”. La canzone seguente è The Secret To New York e la città che non dorme mai (o la grande mela, ok la smetto) è lo sfondo perfetto per questa storia d’amore che sta finendo (“Baby, it’s over now maybe my ups are all downtown so far away, I’m too lost to be found and baby this time were through maybe I guess you knew nothing matters anymore”) “Broadway in my brain the corner where my dreams became mistakes it was written all over your face you said I don’t know who you are remember Union Square was always ours?”. Ciao ciao tesoruccio. La prossima canzone è Kiss Me Last ed la canzone più rock’n’roll ed arrabbiata. Parla della tipica situazione da “carpe diem”, la tipica storia che devi prendere come viene senza pensare al passato quindi “kiss me last, don’t care who kissed you first”. Al nono posto nell’album abbiamo Somebody To Call My Own e, come il titolo dice chiaramente, parla del trovare la persona giusta, quel tipo di persona da poter chiamate tua, questo tipo di persona: “I just need to find somebody to call my only one, if I’ve come undone would you sow me up if I’m broken down, would you stand your ground and fall in love with me”.
You And Only You è la seconda ballata dell’album ed è uan delle più belle canzone d’amore che io abbia mai sentito (e ne ho sentite a iosa di canzoni d’amore) e fa così: “you and only you, you make my heart feel like your pulling every string, you and only you, you make me drop down to my knees and give this ring my everything, baby, once upon a time there was a million stars up high, now you’re the only light I see and I don’t care which way we go, teach me everything you know, everything a love should be so, baby just believe, you and only you”. Summer è l’ultima canzone e parla di un amore estivo , uno di quei summer love che non avremmo voluto che finissero mai “Summer don’t leave me here, summer run high and dry, watching the waves come down on all the days of you and I, I’m waiting, you’re fading, like sparks in the dark, summer I’ll stand the fall cause without you here I just can’t stand at all”.

Ora andare ad ascoltarvi l’abum perchè è fantastico, ho detto a sufficienza.
